Travelling provides so many opportunities for personal growth. This weekend I travelled to Los Angeles and was given the opportunity to grow over and over again. I’m sure you can relate!
(a) Worry vs. Calm: Arriving at the Fort Lauderdale airport in what I thought would be plenty of time, I faced the longest line I’ve ever seen. As I stood in line surrounded by people complaining about how long the line was, agitated and playing out the multitudes of “what if” scenarios that would occur if they missed their flight, I was faced with a choice. Dive right in and join them in a state of freak out and irritation – OR – let the security staff know my flight departure time so they could handle making sure I got on the plane in time — which they did! (Travel Hint: The security staff usually run through the line to pull out people who have flights departing within 30 minutes.)
(b) Asking for What I Want: No one sitting in the middle seat — something I know we all want! The middle seat was still empty, they closed the cabin doors and “Ahhh…., home free! No one’s sitting in the middle seat.” Then, just when I thought it was a done deal, 3 people come walking down the aisle – taking 2 seats in the row in front of me, and then…oh no! he was going to take my middle seat! I quickly looked around, noticed another middle seat open 2 rows ahead and suggested he take that seat. With a slight hesitation on his part, he looked around and saw the other seat and finally sat down! Yay! Now I’m really home free. (Travel Hint 2: This works when you really pay attention to what is going on around you as the plane fills.)
(c) Going with the Flow: It appeared that I was supposed to change flights to come home early. My business meetings were cut short, it was cold and rainy (hey, I thought it never rains in California?) and coming home early would allow me to get a head start on the the week. After lots of phone calls, waiting on hold and turning on all my charm, I arranged to change my flights, return my rental car to a different airport without a fee and got to the airport with plenty of time to make the new flights – or so I thought. When I got to the airport, they was a mix up, the flight really hadn’t been changed and there were no seats. The rain was coming down hard, the winds were kicking up and the airport was becoming a mad house. There I sat – no car, no hotel, no flight to get home. Hmmm…okay, I guess I was supposed to stay in LA, but why? . (Travel Hint 3: Getting angry with the employees and people around you rarely provides any resolution and can often escalade a situation that could have been turned around with a smile and a deep breath!)
Then I got a call from Beverly, who I hadn’t spoken to in a couple of years and who lives in LA. She spotted me at a movie premiere on Friday night (that I got tickets to at the last minute). (Play the Twilight Zone Theme Now – I actually thought about getting in touch with Beverly but didn’t have her number). Voila! Here it was, Beverly came and picked me up and we spent an amazing day together! We ate at “The Gratitude Cafe” shared deep insightful conversation and some incredible “Ah-Ha” moments.
